A History

Here’s what it took to make our 2006 Cabernet: Each vineyard and bunch of grapes was hand-selected and picked before dawn to ensure no flavours were lost in the heat of the day. After de-stemming with about 10% whole berries, a fifteen day maceration was followed by fractional pressing with the free run and press juices being blended at a later stage. 70% of this wine underwent malo in barrel, spending 18 months in 50% new and 50% second fill French oak. This wine was made to be aged for ten years or more. If your taste buds will let you wait that long.

WE CAN WIN ALL THE AWARDS IN THE WORLD,
BUT THAT ALL MEANS NOTHING IF WE DON'T HAVE A WORLD.

On Hartenberg, Nature has blessed us.

Not only do we have the ideal soils and climate to make world-beating wines, but also some of the most beautiful nature anyone could ever wish to see.

And we intend to keep it that way. Here’s how:

Half of our farm’s 170 ha is - and shall remain - uncultivated.

There is an ongoing alien vegetation removal and indigenous tree-planting programme.

And, unlike most farms - which follow a preventative spray timetable, we only spray our crops if an immediate threat is perceived.

That’s just for starters.

You see, we put Nature (our factory) first. Regardless of cost or inconvenience.

So the next time you open a bottle of Hartenberg, you’d better believe it’s very very green. Even if its colour is distinctly red.
