It seems everything Hartenberg winemaker, Carl Schultz, touches these days turns to gold.

At this year’s prestigious Veritas Awards held in Cape Town on 6 October, Hartenberg scooped one Double Gold and four Gold medals.

The Double Gold belonged to Hartenberg’s already critically acclaimed new arrival, The Stork Shiraz, a super premium which was also recently awarded a Five Star rating in the 2007 John Platter’s SA Wine Guide.

Gold went to Hartenberg’s 2003 Shiraz, The Eleanor Chardonnay 2004 (another of Hartenberg’s new super premium wines), and two vintages of Hartenberg Chardonnay (2004, 2005).

Interestingly, all of Hartenberg’s awards were in two of the most highly contested categories: the estate received three out of a total seven Gold medals in the Wooded Chardonnay section, and two for Shirazes – the biggest category this year with 210 entries.

In terms of numbers of Double Gold and Gold awards won, Hartenberg came a close second in the competition, and including its eight Silvers, was placed seventh overall.

Carl Schultz is currently the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year.

At this year’s Cape Winemakers’ Guild Auction, held on 9 October in Somerset West, Hartenberg fetched record prices for its Gravel Hill Shiraz (2003).

Selling just sixty cases of six 770 ml bottles, these wines sold for an average R362.00 (excl. VAT) per bottle - R45.34 more per bottle than Gravel Hill achieved last year.
Also extremely encouraging for Hartenberg was that its Dry Weisser Riesling Auction Reserve (2005), which went under the gavel for the first time at the auction this year, sold for R160.00 (excl. VAT) per bottle. This was an excellent achievement for a white wine.
The Cape Winemakers Guild was started in 1982 by eight independent winemakers who shared a vision of creating premium South African wines that would receive benchmark recognition both locally and abroad. And, as a means of promoting their wines, the members of the CWG held their first public Auction in 1985.
Now in its eleventh year, and with the CWG represented by 37 invited members, all wines sold at the Nedbank CWG Auction are exclusive. They are produced by the members in small quantities, only for the Auction, and are not available anywhere else - unless when re-sold by auction buyers.
Carl Schultz has been a member of the Cape Winemakers’ Guild since 1994, and he is currently the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year.
