Whew - the end of another year!

Office parties, final deadlines, and decorations of snowmen up in the middle of summer. Yup, it's that crazy time of year again when none of us seem to know whether we're coming or going!

In the midst of all of this, welcome to the final edition of "The Good Stuff" for 2008. And please remember, if you feel like you need to get away from it all for a bit, pop in at the Estate anytime for a picnic (or a nap!) on our lawns.

And for those of you a little too far away to visit, may we recommend a good bottle of wine to calm those nerves!

Cheers

The Hartenberg Team

Popular bluegrass band "Blacksmith" are playing two picnic lunch gigs on the lawns at Hartenberg - one at 12h00 on Saturday 29 November, the other at 12h00 on Saturday10 January.

Hartenberg is now available in two more of South Africa's favourite eateries:

Over the past sixteen years, Col'Cacchio has become famous for its unusually creative pizzas, with many fans considering them the best in South Africa. So Hartenberg is proud to now be listed on the wine lists of all sixteen branches. To find out where there's a Col'Cacchio near you, visit www.colcacchio.co.za. We recommend the "Tre Colori" pizza topped with smoked salmon, sour cream and caviar, or the Fantasia with caramelized onion, brie, and sesame seeds. And now, how about a glass or two of Hartenberg to go with that?

Madame Zingara needs no introduction. Originally from Cape Town, Madame Z has now become an institution all over South Africa not only as a restaurant, but also for its magical show performed inside a traveling hundred-year-old Belgian tent. And now, after the old one burned down, Madame Zingara is opening a new Cape Town shop (named Mojelenas") and taking its fantastical brand of dining north to London too. To celebrate, Hartenberg wines have been added to both of these wine lists. Read more about Madame Z at www.madamezingara.com, and let's all wish her luck abroad!

The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), held in London each year, is regarded as the world wine industry's premier judging event.

And, in case you haven't yet heard, Hartenberg's Merlot 2005 won the trophy for the world's best Merlot in 2008.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Hartenberg's The Stork Shiraz 2005 being rated the world's third best Shiraz at Syrah du Monde in France in May, and being awarded five stars by Platters for the second year running, following on from The Stork 2004.

An ecstatic Carl Schultz, Cellarmaster of Hartenberg, had this to say: "Obviously we are thrilled. But, more important than winning this incredibly prestigious trophy, is the fact that many of our wines are now performing consistently well on an international level. And that means we are finally beginning to realize the true potential of what I have always known this Estate is capable of."

Hartenberg's Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 won Gold at last year's IWSC, as did our super premium Chardonnay, The Eleanor 2004, at Chardonnay du Monde in France. Earlier this year, the Estate was also awarded the South African Airways CEO's Trophy for Most Successful Producer for the 2008 listings.

Incidentally, Hartenberg's previous vintage of Merlot earned Carl Schultz the distinction of being the Diner's Club Winemaker of the Year in 2005.

It seems South Africa is firmly on the world wine map!

I was born in the Transkei in July 1972, and when I was eight years old, my father moved the family to the Western Cape.

Because my father worked on Backsberg Wine Estate, I grew up on the farm, and attended a farm primary school. After matriculating from secondary school in Scottsdene, I worked for several years at an advertising agency, but then got a scholarship from Backsberg Wines to study at an Agricultural College in Stellenbosch.

I graduated in 2000 and worked at Backsberg for two years, and then at Thelema Mountain Vineyards for a year and a half to gain experience.

I joined Hartenberg Wine Estate in 2002, and managed to travel to Bordeaux in 2003, where I did a harvest at Chateau d' Angludet in the Margaux appellation.

I have recently been appointed to the position of Winemaker of Hartenberg Estate, where - under the tutelage of Carl Schultz - I hope to continue the magnificent tradition of winemaking the Estate has managed to create in its three hundred year history.
