Hartenberg Shiraz up
another notch

The past few months have seen Hartenberg's Shirazes win some highly prestigious awards, securing their reputation as SA's best:

  • At the Michelangelo Awards recently, The Stork Shiraz (2003) won the Grand Prix Trophy for being the top rated wine out of 1473 wines.

  • The Stork 2004 was awarded 5-Stars in the 2007 Platters guide.
  • Wine Spectator Magazine (USA) rated our Gravel Hill Shiraz 93/100 (joint highest of any South African Shiraz).

  • Our "regular" Shiraz was awarded a Gold Medal at the prestigious Syrah-du-Monde Competition held in the spiritual home of the variety, Ampuis in the Rhone valley France
  • 2007 Harvest report

This year's harvest was the second smallest in twenty years.

Dry conditions after winter meant that berries were smaller this year than most, leading to very good colour and concentration on the red wines and great flavours on the white.

Strong winds during flowering in late spring also caused fewer, and smaller, bunches and berry sets.

Grapes ripened with significantly lower sugar levels this year, and consequently lower alcohol. Grape acid levels were the best in five vintages.

How The Stork got its name

It's the early 1940's and the world is at war. A young man joins the RAF as a spitfire pilot and, because of his long skinny legs, earns the nickname "Stork". Forty years later, and now a lover of wine (Shiraz in particular) he buys a wine farm, and sets it on course to become one of South Africa's top ten. In honour of Ken Mackenzie, we named our multi-award winning flagship Shiraz, The Stork.

If you've visited our estate, you'll know that a large portion of it is pristine wetland. However, because of the inaccessibility of this habitat, you may not know that it plays host to dozens of creatures (like rare frogs) and birds such as the furtive African Sedge Warbler.

Well now you have the opportunity to find them for yourself. We've just completed work on a 2 km wetland trail, so you can explore it for yourself. We'll even pack you a picnic rucksack (and some wine) so you can stop and relax along the way.

Call us (or click here) to tell us you're coming, and remember to let us know if you want a packed picnic. Oh, and don’t forget your binoculars.
