STORK'S FLIGHT SPRING 2019

ENVIRONMENTAL WARRIORS

Lover her or hate her, Greta Thunberg, the 16-year old Climate Change trooper from Sweden, tackles this hot topic powerfully and with passion, putting it in the spotlight it so immensely deserves:

“The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have the facts and solutions. All we have to do is wake up and change. Many people say that Sweden is just a small country, and it doesn't matter what we do, but I have learned you are never too small to make a difference."

Our commitment to the Environment

Wilhelm Joubert, fervent Hartenberg viticulturist, practises what Greta Thunberg preaches and spearheads conservation farming in the Cape Winelands - never too small to make a difference! For some of us, the experiences and thrills of growing up on a farm are only a rich and remote dream; for Wilhelm, it means that plant and animal aspects, amongst others, are an innate part of his DNA.

Constantly taking an interest in what’s happening on the international viticulture platform, Wilhelm currently experiments with new cover crops to reduce weeds and increase insect life in the soil:  Wild Peas for their ability to bind and release nitrogen at the right time, and Japanese radish used particularly on our stony clay soils to advance water ingress.  He also favours Phacelia flowers – a natural weed suppressor which prevents leaching of nitrogen and soil erosion.  Its vibrant purple flowers attract bees and offer this species under threat of urbanisation a five-star environment in which to flourish.  This supports our quest to assist in increasing the bee population, the most important pollinator of food crops globally.

Sun’s out – time to play!

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” - John Lubbock

Sun is to summer what food is to wine. Lazy-days are to summer what food is to wine.  Sun, lazy-days, sumptuous food and world-class wines come in abundance at Hartenberg.  Join us for a delightful choice of wholesome yet summery dishes, including Steak Salad, breezy-light Trout Salad, the perfect Caesar Salad (a wonderful match for our beguiling Chardonnay), along with firm favourites like our ever-faithful Hamburgers and Chardonnay Chicken.

We’re back from a creative and restful winter hibernation to offer wine tastings 7 days a week, featuring fresh and moreish current vintages, with a touch of some of our best veteran vintages.

Third Time Lucky

This year, the number THREE was a good luck charm in the Hartenberg treasure chest!

We have long lauded the significance of Tim Atkin MW in the South African wine universe, and it is thus with pride and an immense sense of accomplishment that we celebrate three of our wines being included in Tim’s Wines of the Year in his 2019 South Africa Special Report:  The Eleanor Chardonnay 2017; The Stork Shiraz 2015; and Gravel Hill Shiraz 2015.

The Cape Winemakers Guild Auction has built a solid reputation as the most significant national wine auction in South Africa, based on the superiority of wine quality and the average price achieved. Hartenberg CWG Shiraz achieved an impressive third highest price on auction this year!

To complete our auspicious and extraordinary hat-trick for 2019, Hartenberg Merlot, Hartenberg Shiraz and Doorkeeper Shiraz all took Gold at the Michelangelo Awards!

Hurry to Hartenberg ahead of the Christmas shopping rush – some of these wines are still available from our Cellar Door.
