Autumn is often deemed as the season which illustrates that change can be beautiful.  In a multitude of golds, purples, oranges and reds, it sometimes seems as if trees fall apart, but from a different angle the sun steps back, leaves go to sleep and a new season awakens.

And so, change can be both melancholic and magical.

Sad Good-Byes and New Beginnings

At the end of April we said goodbye to Betty after an illustrious 28 years skillfully selling our wine, as she heads to a well-deserved retirement.  

Betty will always be remembered for her astonishing gift for connecting with people and quickly assessing what it is that they’re looking for. She was a priceless part of the Hartenberg family and we thank her deeply for so many years of remarkable service. If you’re lucky, you’ll still see Betty around on the odd days she chooses to woo our visitors to the tasting room.
Settling into a different role, some of you might already have met Rene who joined us from Singita and Rust en Vrede restaurant – two icons of outstanding customer experiences and memorable wine offerings. Rene sealed her relationship with Hartenberg when she insisted on getting married in our cellar – something not offered to the public.
We admired her negotiating skills and thought it best to use it to our own advantage! Please contact Rene  for your next function, lunch or wine requirements.?
The Devil’s in the (Merlot) Detail

 Attention to detail, to be precise. We leave no stone unturned to assure that what goes into a bottle of our wine is nothing but the best! This time, Merlot gets the nod! 

 “The best wine grape vineyards in the Western Cape have one thing in common – they are managed according to the wine the grapes are destined for. Vinpro and Winetech recently announced the five regional winners of their annual Vineyard Block Competition” and our viticulturist, Wilhelm Joubert, was recognized for his unequivocal attention to detail in the vineyard by taking the honors in the Stellenbosch region with our Merlot block. The Stellenbosch region stretches far and wide to include the wards of Constantia and Durbanville, making this no small feat!
Merlot was named in the 17th century after the Merlau, a little black bird with an appetite for this early ripening variety. Much like its famous place of origin, Merlot demands the best site and clay soils Hartenberg has to offer. The variety thrives, provided it is buffered against water stress and high temperature. Consequently, our best sites are at altitude, yet along the mid and foot slopes, where soil moisture is freely available all year.

A Beautiful Year

A couple of exceptional things happened in 2015: China scrapped its inhumane one-child policy; Africa went a year without naturally occurring polio; 195 countries signed the world’s first accord on climate change; and NASA confirmed the presence of water on Mars.

You might have your own special memories, but in the world of wine it was an equally remarkable year. We remember cold nights and mild days.  We recorded not too much rain or wind, and perfect flowering. Thrown together, these conditions resulted in outstanding wines with fresh acidity and good fruit. Wines which are drinking beautifully now but will shine even brighter with age.
Join us for wine tasting on the farm to choose your favorite 2015 reds and winter white wines!  In warm family tradition we celebrate the Moms and Dads out there with a Yuppiechef Voucher to the value of R400, for every R2000 you spend on any selection of our wines, until the end of June.
And as our 2018 wines settle in the cellar on their journey to the bottle, and eventually into your homes, we invite you to slow down with us at Hartenberg.  Soak up the gentle autumn sun and pamper yourself with our winter-warming lunch menu from Monday to Saturday.  Indulge in a choice of old-time favorites:  the ever popular Hartenburger; Chardonnay Chicken or Steak and Shiraz (available on Friday and Saturday only).
