2017 – a Defining Vintage

“Hope means that we must trust and wait for what is still unseen” – probably every winemaker’s lifeline.

Preceded by another winter with under-average rainfall, our growing season was warm and left us weary of what was to come.  There were the very real concerns about water.   And then, quite surprisingly, the end of February brought cool evenings to provide for very good colour development on the red grapes and fantastic preservation of flavours in our white grapes.  The remainder of the harvest saw a continuation of cooler evenings and fewer heat waves than any other year, the first indication that this vintage might bring a couple of treasures.

Currently, our wines are undergoing malolactic fermentation.  “Already we can see that wines from this vintage seem to be wonderfully fruit-forward and aromatic with great acidity and elegance.  We have superb Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot in the cellar!   The 2017 vintage is certainly above-average - it surprisingly turned out brilliantly!”, Carl happily beams.

Now we wait for what is still unseen.
