Celebrity Chef Bertus Basson ignites gourmet side of the grill

Grilled, charred, smoked and scorched....The Bottelary Hills Wine Route is all fired up for its sizzling series of Pop Up Lunches, when renowned celebrity chef, Bertus Basson, will fan the flames for a superb Sunday lunch prepared on an open fire on 17 April, 14 August and 4 December.

Igniting the gourmet side of the grill with talent and bravado, this highly acclaimed chef has teamed up with the wine folk of this prime winegrowing area northwest of Stellenbosch, to celebrate the flavours of fire, with a contemporary twist.

In May this year James Browne found himself in South Australia. The first week was taken up with bird-watching in rural areas, whilst the balance of the trip was visiting cellar doors. Other than the generous welcome at the wineries the similarity to the Hartenberg wine-tasting offering ended there. The preference at the Australian wineries was for a stand-up bar counter service rather than our relaxed sit-down. I presume that this might have been introduced due to the sheer numbers of visitors that they receive during holidays, weekends and festivals. It makes for a very different experience with the winery though. Throughout the trip the grape varieties that gave the greatest pleasure, and which provide the memories, were the white ones. Earlier this year we held a brand survey to which we received some really constructive feedback, thank you. One of the conclusions was that our labels needed some tweaking. The process has begun and can be seen on some wines from December on-wards. Our industry evolves continuously and it was our challenge to see how we could refresh our labels without losing what our brand stands for.

As you know the non-Auction versions of these wines receive the same focussed attention in the vineyard and cellar and we invite you to taste what is available at the Tasting Room, which is open seven days a week through summer for your convenience. However those who can’t make it don’t despair. You are now able to purchase our wines online at www.hartenbergestate.com. Though, should you be heading to Hartenberg and  are  fortunate to find yourself here over lunchtime you will be offered the choice of our picnic basket packed with  locally-sourced delights or,  our delicious, summer-inspired a la carte menu. There is an under-12 kid-friendly-menu available on request as well. Needless to say, bookings are advisable to avoid disappointment.
