Lover her or hate her, Greta Thunberg, the 16-year old Climate Change trooper from Sweden, tackles this hot topic powerfully and with passion, putting it in the spotlight it so immensely deserves:

“The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have the facts and solutions. All we have to do is wake up and change. Many people say that Sweden is just a small country, and it doesn't matter what we do, but I have learned you are never too small to make a difference."

Our commitment to the Environment

Wilhelm Joubert, fervent Hartenberg viticulturist, practises what Greta Thunberg preaches and spearheads conservation farming in the Cape Winelands - never too small to make a difference! For some of us, the experiences and thrills of growing up on a farm are only a rich and remote dream; for Wilhelm, it means that plant and animal aspects, amongst others, are an... read more »

The Stork 2015 and our Estate Shiraz 2016 were both awarded Gold in the internationally acclaimed Syrah Du Monde this week, with The Stork placing in the Top 4. Hartenberg scooped 2 of just 4 Golds awarded to South Africa (only 15 Gold medals were awarded internationally in the 2019 competition). Incredibly this is the third time a vintage of The Stork Shiraz has listed in the International Top Ten. The other vintages were 2008, which placed 1st (in 2012) and the 2005, which placed 3rd (in 2007).

This news comes hot on the heels of the Sommelier Wine Awards who awarded a Gold medal to The Stork 2015:

Annamaria Juhasz of The Fat Duck was a big advocate of this unanimous Gold Lister, saying: ‘The wine shines with a nose of black fruits and eucalypatus; this feels young, vibrant and very complex with notes of citrus peel and bramble, and with blackberries on the palate. It’s a beautiful example... read more »

Neal Martin, renowned international wine journalist, waxed lyrical about the Cape Winelands in his recent 2018 South African Report:  “The truth is that Cape is one of the most mind-bogglingly beautiful landscapes you will ever visit, where jagged mountains soar up to heavens and cascade into oceans; fynbos-covered hillsides are home to startling flora and fauna . . . . The Cape is a visceral, unforgettable experience. Every single person whose feet have touched South African soil returns with shattered preconceptions and a desire to return as soon as possible.”

We truly have an amazing country! Which begs the question: with increased pressure on dispensable income for South Africans, is now not the time to be a tourist in our own country, to re-discover the treasures in our own neighbourhoods and our own backyards?

Autumn is often deemed as the season which illustrates that change can be beautiful.  In a multitude of golds, purples, oranges and reds, it sometimes seems as if trees fall apart, but from a different angle the sun steps back, leaves go to sleep and a new season awakens.

And so, change can be both melancholic and magical.

Sad Good-Byes and New Beginnings

At the end of April we said goodbye to Betty after an illustrious 28 years skillfully selling our wine, as she heads to a well-deserved retirement.

Betty will always be remembered for her astonishing gift for connecting with people and quickly assessing what it is that they’re looking for. She was a priceless part of the Hartenberg family and we thank her deeply for so many years of remarkable service. If... read more »

Winter brings with it a few things we don't enjoy. Mostly late sunrises and early sunsets. Who would imagine that it also brings with ti a plethora of beautiful and unusual words to describe those previous winter treasures, like apricity - the warmth of the wun in winter, or peiskos (Norwegian) - the feeling you get when you sit in front of a fireplace and enjoy its warmth.

Specific to the Western Cape, we dearly hope that it brings with it copious, drenching, excessive rain!

At Hartenberg we have always taken a very cautious and long-term view regarding the value of water and it’s strategic importance to our business. [Read more] about our water-saving venture, as explained by Carl.
