How a Bird Inspired a Wine

At Londolozi, it’s not always about leopards and lions, we have a large selection of resident and migratory birds which can be seen at different times during the year. In particular we have up to six different types of storks that can be seen.

Storks are large, long-necked, long-legged birds which wade with long, stout bills. They have no syrinx (vocal organ) and are therefore mute, giving no call, and instead communicate by clattering their bills. Many species are migratory and most storks eat fish, insects, frogs, earthworms and even small birds and mammals. Hartenberg wins International Trophy at Decanter World Wine Awards

Hartenberg Wine Estate has continued its winning streak having been awarded The International Trophy for Best Bordeaux Varietals (under £15) entered at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). A Gold medal was also awarded to The Stork Shiraz 2010. The results were announced at an awards event held on the eve of 24 June in London. 

The DWWA is the world’s largest wine industry competition with representation from wine countries across the globe. This year the 17 member-strong panel, judging the South African wines, was chaired by Lynne Sherriff MW and was made up by a team of influential judges from across the wine industry. The International Trophy taste-off was presided over by Competition Chairman Steven Spurrier, who was joined by the vice-Chair Gerard Basset OBE MS MW, and three Regional Chairs.

Hartenberg Wine Estate has been awarded a Gold Medal for its 2010 Merlot at the 21st Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. A total of 58 producer countries competed in this prestigious competition, held this year in the Belgian capital city. Sommeliers, wine buyers, importers, journalists and wine writers –310 wine tasters representing 51 nationalities – gathered for three days earlier in May to judge this year’s entries.

Already an award-winning wine this superb Merlot was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2013 Veritas Awards as well as receiving a 4-star rating in the internationally recognized 2014 Platter's South African Wine Guide. The US-based Robert Parker Group scored the same wine a total of 90 points, an accomplishment not achieved by many.
