Lunches

The seasonal lunch that Hartenberg Estate, located thirty-five minutes from Cape Town, offers is something of a secret. Not widely advertised, it has been word of mouth from those who have enjoyed the peace of the venue, and the good value, that has been effective in increasing their popularity. The simplicity of what is offered attracts many repeat visitors who are able to sit in the shade of the gardens on warm days and in front of the log fire in the tasting room when the weather turns cold.

As with everything that the estate does the preparation of the lunches is a team effort. The flavorsome simplicity of the meal on offer does not need the talents of a classically trained chef but Mariaan Matthyse, Faye Swartz and their team know what the customers want and happily provide it.

In summer the set meal consists of a selection of freshly prepared salad, snoek pate, cold meats and cheese which is accompanied by homemade bread and a carafe of House wine. In winter a hearty soup is on offer daily accompanied by “vetkoek” and honey and on Fridays a Cape Malay “Dish of the Week” is offered. They are preceded by snoek pate and cheese with home made bread and a carafe of House wine to add further value.  The seasonal lunches are served Monday to Saturday and reservations are recommended, particularly on Saturdays and during all holidays. It is worth noting that the estate is closed on Sundays and all Religious Holidays.
